About 'The Land Foundation'
'The Land' was initiated in 1998 by two Thai artists Kamin Lertchaiprasert and Rirkrit Tiravanija They bought a piece of land which is a 20 minute drive outside of Chaing Mai. Artist friends were asked to contribute by building structures on the site, inspired by buddhist meditation retreat sites. The Land is made up of 3/4's of water and 1/4 of land like that of the human body, there are 2 large rice field's, chickens and a vegetable garden with attempts to aim at sustainable living.' www.thelandfoundation.org
'The Land' has evolved after its first one year project and last year became 'The Land Foundation'. The Land Foundation is a platform of and for social engagement, experimental alternative education at the intersection of debate, and holistic learning. It is aiming to promote and support art and culture, natural farming and self-knowledge through Vipassana meditation. Its activities emphasise education, discussion of ideas, and knowledge-sharing." I am taking part as a part-time participant in One Year Project 2 with 'The Land Foundation'.
Conversations on Art and Sustainability
I spend the weekend hanging out with Suwan Laimanee, (Suwan Laimanee was the first artist who introduced massage as art in 1996 at the Biennale Florence, Italy. In 1997 Suwan's video art massage was introduced at Documenta X with Michelangelo Pistoletto's Progetto Arte.) We have long discussions on politics in Thailand, organic food, the evil Monsanto and art. We go to markets shop for bicycles and eat loads of good food. Aoife and I buy seeds to plant at The Land from Pun Pun (http://www.punpunthailand.org/) who have a vegetarian organic restaurant at a Buddhist temple in Chaing Mai. On Wednesday we have a meeting at 'The Land' office, the British consulate gives a presentation they would like The Land Foundation to get involved in a project that deals with air pollution in Chaing Mai. That evening we have a dinner at our (the one year participants) rented accommodation. Kamin has just arrived back from Melbourne where he did a presentation on The Land Foundation and had an exhibition of his work. He shows us images and describes a project that he visited in Melbourne called Ceres. CERES 'the Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies', is an internationally recognised model of a
sustainable society located in Melbourne, Australia. We have a check in discussion on how we are all doing and what projects we are developing and working on. Ohm shows us pictures of her car that had been totaled by a buffalo. The rest of the week is spent working on Trespass.
